  • Republic Resilient

9 June 2014, by Badri Raina

Much as this writer and many millions the world-over wish this would happen, it appears unlikely for now that Capitalism’s slayer is brewing within its own productive womb. That “inevitability” seems not so inevitable. The historical transformation in productive practices from factory to call centre seems to yield crony aspirants to its fruits rather than ideological antagonists fated to sound its knell. When economies crash, as in America and Europe, the culprits—banks, financial (…)

  • The Strength of Indian Democracy

    9 June 2014, by D. Bandyopadhyay

The election of Shri Narendrabhai Modi to the post of the Prime Minister of India and that of Smt Mayawati as the Chief Minister of UP earlier reinforce my faith in the inner strength of our democracy. Almost every democratic country does have its “blue-blooded” families who always aspire for the high elected posts through their wealth and family and business social network. Bushes and Kennedys of the US could be one illustration. Britain has its “ruling” families in a more camouflaged way (…)

  • Mandate and After

9 June 2014, by Nikhil Chakravartty

    From N.C.’s Writings
Nineteen-Eightyfive has begun in this country with a New Look government formed after a phenomenal victory of the Congress under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi. With the unprecedented Congress score of 400 seats in the Lok Sabha, the Rajiv Government commands a majority which never came to the lot of any previous Prime Minister, not even of his illustrious grandfather, while the votes secured this time by the Congress-I crossing the majority of total votes polled, is (…)

  • Climate Change: Uncomfortable Realities

9 June 2014, by Sudhir Vombatkere

World Environment Day — June 5
People and society as a whole react to sudden or quantum increase in matters which affect general safety or welfare, but are neglectful of slow changes. Global warming and consequent climate change have ongoing effects which are gradual or creeping but very real. The long-term effects are known and accepted as meriting serious consideration. There are many antici-pated effects of climate change, but possibly the best known is the melting of polar ice (and (…)

  • Badaun Outrage: Preliminary Report of a Fact-finding Team

    9 June 2014

A fact-finding team, comprising Rajan Singh (Actionaid), Ram Kumar (Dynamic Action Group), Ramdular (National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights—NCdhr), Neetu (Humsafar Support Centre for Women), Shubhangi Singh (AALI) and Shilpi Aggraval (SAKAR Sanstha, Bareilly), visited Katra Sahadatganj village in Dattaganj Block in UP’s Badaun district where the abduction, gang rape and murder of two minor girls allegedly by three brothers Pappu Yadav, Avdesh Yadav, Urvesh Yadav, sons of Vir Yadav, and two (…)

  • Social Activist’s Plea to the PM

    9 June 2014

    Dear Sir,
I, Dr Nutan Thakur, a social activist working in the field of transparency and accountability in public life present here a few facts brought through a Lucknow-based Hindi daily Nishpaksh Pratidin which are prima facie extremely detrimental and damaging against Sri Nripendra Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, recently appointed through the ordinance way, alleging him to be a CIA agent.
As per the news article “Dagiyon ke acche dinon ki shuruwat: CIA agent hone (…)

  • Importance of being Nawaz Sharif

9 June 2014, by Kuldip Nayar

I followed the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to India from his arrival to the departure. I did not find any false note either in his observations or meetings. He did not mention Kashmir. Nor did he meet the separatists who are always keen to have talks with the Pakistani leaders, not the Indians. From all angles, it was a positive and constructive visit.
Still I do not see any breakthrough in the apish stand that the two sides have taken from the time the two countries parted (…)

  • New President Elected — Ukraine has Won Half the Battle

    9 June 2014

    by R.G. Gidadhubli
Notwithstanding the persisting crisis in the eastern parts of the country, Ukraine has succeeded in holding the presidential election on May 25, 2014. The new President, Petro Poroshenko, is a 48-year-old billionaire and chocolate magnate who was declared as the outright winner getting 54 per cent votes. This was most unexpected as he defeated his closest strong contender, challenger and popular leader being the former Prime Minister and leader of Batkivshchyna Party, (…)

  • Remembering Tiananmen Massacre, June 4, 1989

    9 June 2014

On the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre this week, we are reproducing excerpts from the ‘Political Notebook’ by the Mainstream editor (who was then its associate editor) that appeared in this journal’s June 10, 1989 issue.
    China Today and Tomorrow
What began in the early hours of June 4, 1989 at Tiananmen Square in the heart of China’s capital, Beijing, culminated in a veritable bloodbath turning the ‘Square of Heavenly Peace’ into one of earthly hell. ... The stark reality is (…)
