Statement following April 6 incident at Dantewada

Monday 19 April 2010

#socialtags

We condemn in no uncertain terms the killing of more than 70 CRPF personnel by the Maoists in the Makrana Forests of Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada on April 6. We also condemn the killing of more than a hundred tribal villagers by the security forces since June 2009 in the same area in the course of the ongoing Operation Green Hunt. Loss of any life diminishes human values

The April 6 incident highlights the urgent necessity of reviewing Operation Green Hunt and, if necessary, reversing it.

In this situation we are highly concerned over the fact that war hysteria is being whipped up by vested interests. These vested interests are urging the governments, both at the Centre and in the affected States, to escalate Operation Green Hunt and raise it to a higher level. We fear the consequences of this escalation would be horrific in the sense that there could be a large number of casualties on both sides.

We are thus exhorting both sides to:

a) desist from taking any such step that could lead to unforeseen developments,

b) work towards ceasefire and cessation of hostilities so as to help initiate dialogue between the Union Government and CPI (Maoist), and to address the real issues affecting the people like forced corporate/state acquisition of land, displacement, tribal rights and the lack of governance.
