Press Release
The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued today (February 10, 2026) the following statement:
The Communist Party of India has moved the Supreme Court of India through Annie Raja, National Secretary of the CPI, seeking urgent judicial intervention against the repeated hate speeches and conduct of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The CPI submits that a continuing pattern of statements and actions by the Chief Minister has vitiated the public atmosphere in Assam, deepened communal polarisation, and undermined the constitutional values of equality, fraternity, and secularism.
The petition places before the Court instances that reveal an alarming misuse of public office to legitimise prejudice and hostility against minorities, particularly the Muslim minority. These include public pronouncements and official political messaging that single out minority communities, portray them as threats, and normalise exclusionary attitudes. Of grave concern is a now deleted video circulated from official political platforms, which presented a dangerous new tool to spread hatred and incite violence. Such conduct, emanating from the highest executive authority of the state, has contributed to the communalisation of the social environment and has encouraged institutional practices that discriminate against minorities, eroding their sense of security and equal citizenship.
The CPI has approached the Supreme Court demanding strict legal accountability and has specifically sought the constitution of a Special Investigation Team to conduct an independent and impartial probe into the Chief Minister
