Dear Isaac, Don’t You remember? | Murzban Jal

Dear Isaac,
Don’t you remember?
The joyous beauty of our youth
When we sang and ran up the hills?

Dear Isaac
Don’t you remember?
The chilled winds blowing into our faces
And how we laughed together?

Dear Isaac
Don’t you remember?
How they came
With the crooked cross, leather jackets and jackboots
Goose-stepping throwing us both
In the furnace of hell?

Dear Isaac
Don’t you remember?
How they stamped
The Star of David on your jacket?

And don’t you remember,
Dear Isaac?
How in the ghettos
We both fought together valiantly
Those with the crooked cross, leather jackets and jackboots?

And don’t you remember
How we both participated together
In the Great Uprising in the ghettos?

But then why
Dear Isaac
Do you have
Now the Star of David yet with you?
And that too stitched on your leather jacket
And why are you wearing jackboots that you so disliked
Trampling on my very being
Killing babies, their mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters
Neighbors, loved ones and unknown ones?

Dear Isaac,
Don’t you remember?
Don’t you remember?
Don’t you remember…….?
