The National Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement today (August 12, 2026):

The Communist Party of India expresses its deep sorrow at the demise of Comrade M. P. Parameswaran, renowned nuclear scientist, Marxist thinker and one of the foremost proponents of the people’s science movement in India. He passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind a rich legacy of scientific work, social commitment and political thought. His journey from the world of nuclear science to the wider arena of people’s science reflected his conviction that scientific knowledge must not remain confined to laboratories and institutions, but must reach ordinary people and serve the cause of social progress.
Comrade Parameswaran played a pioneering role in strengthening the people’s science movement in Kerala and through the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad contributed immensely to creating scientific awareness among the people. He worked tirelessly to popularise science, promote scientific temper and challenge superstition and obscurantism. He also engaged deeply with questions of development, environment, technology, education and decentralised planning, insisting that the benefits of science and technology must serve the needs of the people rather than narrow commercial interests. His writings and interventions made complex scientific and social questions accessible to generations of activists, students and common people.
A committed Marxist and public intellectual, Comrade Parameswaran believed that science, reason and social transformation were inseparably connected. His contribution extended beyond the scientific sphere to the broader struggles for a just, democratic and egalitarian society. The CPI conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family, comrades and the entire people’s science movement. His lifelong dedication to scientific temper, popular education and social justice will remain an enduring source of inspiration for the Left and democratic movement in the country.
