MUSINGS 21 July 2021
I have been focusing on the fact that the Coronavirus is just one aspect to our dismal existence. Today many more unsettling realities are intruding into our lives, making our everyday survival extremely, extremely difficult. Now comes up another hitting reality. We are under watch. We are no longer azaad. Nah, we are not. As there exist intrusions by the various sarkari characters and the machinery under their direct control. Everything, big and small, in our (…)

MUSINGS 14 July 2021
With more and more communal characters on the prowl, can we declare communalism, or to put it along the desi strain ‘communal-pan', as a full-fledged disease or disorder of the day! Yes, it ought to be termed and notified as a disease or disorder, which is growing and spreading out in our country, un-checked and un-controlled! Today the Right-Wing brigades and Fascist lobbies are expanding and with that out to destroy structures, human and otherwise.
How easily power goes to the head of politicians. When Delhi authorities were told to produce student leader Umar Khalid in Court, the police wanted to take him in handcuffs and leg chains. "Handcuffs in both hands from the backside" as they explained in their application. The reason cited was that armed assailants had tried to free an undertrial prisoner at the GTB Hospital a couple of months earlier.
Chastising the police authorities, the Court said: "The application [ by (…)

16 June 2016 Humra Quraishi
Last week as the veteran film star Dilip Kumar was hospitalised, I took out my notes on him and his wife, Saira Bano. I had met the couple just once and that too rather briefly in the lobby of a five-star hotel in New Delhi. But soon after that meet, I had interviewed Saira Bano for a national daily. This was in the summer of 1999, in the backdrop of the major controversy erupting, with Dilip Kumar receiving the Nishaan-e- Imtiaz award from the (…)

IMPRESSIONS
It spoke a great deal about the Government's concept of democracy when a journalist was charged with sedition for criticising the Government's Covid policy. The Supreme Court had to tell the Government that it was the right of journalists to criticise, even brutally, government policies.
The judgment put it in words that must always be remembered by all, elected authorities and the public and journalists themselves. As the bench put it: The time is long past when the mere (…)

MUSINGS – 9 June, 2021
Earlier this week a Muslim family was mowed down in the Canadian city of London in the Ontario province, by a hate-filled surcharged man. Four members of that family died, in that “premeditated” vehicle attack, with the lone survivor, a young boy, grievously injured, battling for life in a hospital.
Within hours, the Canadian police not just the nabbed the killer but was also forthright in their statement: "It is believed that these victims were targeted because (…)

IMPRESSIONS When times are normal, the quality of leadership is not on trial; even an unimaginative head of a country, an organisation, a family can get by. The situation changes when a threat looms. Covid created such a situation in India and the record shows that it was handled in a manner no one can be proud of.
To a large extent, the situation was handled from a standpoint not of public good but of public relations. The result was that the people did not quite know what was (…)

Tejasvi Surya is one of the brightest man in public life today. He is young, educated and intelligent. He is a good speaker and can carry an audience with ease. He is a lawyer by profession and a trained Carnatic musician. When such a man goes communally partisan, it can only be described as a tragedy. Tejasvi's latest adventure into communal politics gives a Hindutva viewpoint even to corona and oxygen.
Hospital beds being allocated to Muslims is the newest (…)
