PRESS RELEASE

Withdraw the order reducing cut off for NEET PG to Zero Percentile - IDPD
This will benefit the affluent sections only, albeit lower the quality of medical education

The Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has taken serious note of the decision of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to bring down the cut-off percentile for the NEET for postgraduate admissions to Zero. It is reported that nearly 9700 PG seats in the medical colleges fell vacant in the past three years. The reason given is that these seats lie vacant because of the cut-off for the entrance, which was only 20%. This contention is not correct. In fact, many students cannot get admission to private colleges because of the high fee structure. But now the students from high-income groups will get PG seats even if they do not fulfill the merit criteria. It is an irony that the number of private medical colleges has become nearly equal to the number of government medical colleges and they are charging exorbitantly. Many of these colleges have poor infrastructure. To cope with the issue and to check the quality of the students the government has decided to hold exit tests for the students appearing in the final MBBS exam. With this, the Government has washed its hands off quality control in the medical colleges and thrown all onuses on the students. The mushrooming of new colleges should be stopped and instead, infrastructure should be strengthened in the existing colleges. It is imperative that the highest level of quality education is provided in medical colleges both at the Post Graduate and Undergraduate levels. This decision will adversely affect the quality in the name of filling the seats. Hence it should be withdrawn.
